How should bicycles be stored if not ridden for a long time?

When you can't ride a bike for a long time, if you want to put it aside, these few things should be done well to not only prevent rusting from standing still for a long time, but also ensure that you can ride it out at any time in the future.

  1. Half of the tire is deflated

If there is no trailer condition, whether it is highway, mountain or folding bicycle, you should pay attention to the tire pressure of your car throughout the winter, and keep enough tire pressure to prevent tire deformation. Too much or no air in the tires is not good, and if there is no air at all, it can easily cause damage to the inner and outer tires. Although the tires will naturally deflate over time, if it is determined that you will not ride for a long time, it is recommended to deflate the tires by half to reduce the tire pressure. For example, for a mountain bike with a tire pressure of 50psi, deflate it to about 30psi.

  2. Loose chain

When changing gears on a bicycle, the chain will be stretched or relaxed through the guide chain legs of the rear transmission depending on the gear ratio. If you don't ride for a long time, remember to change the speed of the chain to a relaxed state to avoid metal fatigue caused by prolonged tightening of the chain. The gap at each connection will gradually become larger and loose, and the chain will be stretched, which will cause inaccurate speed change.

To loosen the chain, the chain on the large toothed disc should be placed on the small disc, while the transmission may be loose due to the difference between forward and reverse direction. The chain may be on the small disc or large disc. The guide chain legs of the transmission should be kept folded upwards.

The way to distinguish is to look at the guide chain legs of the rear transmission, fold them up to loosen them, and extend them down to pull and support the chain, which is of course a tight state.

  3. Release the brakes

The same meaning as relaxing the chain is that the brakes are usually in a tight state, so if you don't ride for a long time, you can release the brakes to avoid prolonged tension and aging.

For a mountain bike, loosen the front and rear V-clips; If it is a road vehicle, the Shimano system's C-clip rotates the knob on the brake clamp, while the Campagnolo system pulls the brake handle forward.

  4. Apply oil to areas prone to rusting

Bicycles with screw locks can still rust when parked for a long time, so anti rust and lubricating oil should be sprayed. All screws and metal parts on the car should be oiled every 90 days to prevent rust. Thick and long-lasting anti rust oil can be used for screws in various parts; The chain should be sprayed with wet chain oil every season.

In addition, it is relatively easy to overlook the brake wire and transmission wire. Usually, when riding a bike, there is often rainwater and mud accumulation, which can also get damp and rust over time. Therefore, it is also necessary to spray anti rust lubricating oil.

The rust prevention cycle of general anti rust lubricating oil is about 90 days, so remember to re oil it every season to ensure that it does not rust.

  5. Waxing and covering protection

If you are more particular, applying wax to the entire vehicle can reduce the adhesion of dust. However, it is recommended not to use spray wax, or spray it on a rag and then evenly smear it on the frame to prevent wax from contaminating the big tooth plate crank, gear, chain, etc.

Including tooth discs, chains, flywheels, and transmissions, chains and flywheels are areas with high levels of oil contamination, so they are generally cleaned afterwards. This step is easy to remove the wheel set to prevent the cleaning agent from seeping into the flower drum.

Covering with canvas not only prevents dust but also reduces sunlight exposure

  6. Wheel set cleaning

The step of cleaning the wheel set is to first clean the tire, and use a hard bristled brush to clean it effectively. During the cleaning process, pay attention to whether there is any damage to the outer tire, and handle it as soon as possible if any damage is found!

  7. Wipe the frame

Wipe with clean water using a soft bristle brush to remove surface dust, especially paying attention to the front and rear clamps and transmission, the bottom of the frame, and the inside of the front fork. These areas should be cleaned carefully* Easy to remove and clean the wheel set, it is quite thorough.

*Afterwards, use a soft cloth to dry the vehicle body, taking care not to use too much force. The screw components should be carefully wiped dry to avoid rusting. Afterwards, car enthusiasts with conditions can undergo waxing maintenance.

Of course, for bicycles that have been left unused for a long time, it would be better to have them thoroughly inspected at the store before use.
